A classic Dave Barry my Dad sent me years ago... hilarious!

If you're a new parent, there will come a time when either you or your spouse will say these words:

''Let's take the baby to a restaurant!''

Now, to a normal, sane person, this statement is absurd. It's like saying:
''Let's take a moose to the opera!''

But neither you nor your spouse will see anything inappropriate about the idea of taking your baby to a restaurant. This is because, as new parents, you are experiencing a magical period of wonder, joy and possibility that has made you really stupid. You are not alone: All new parents undergo a sharp drop in intelligence. It's nature's way of enabling them to form an emotional bond with a tiny human who relates with other humans exclusively by spitting up on them. Even very smart parents are affected, as we see from these two quotations:
Albert Einstein Shortly Before The Birth Of His Son: ''To know that what is impenetrable to us really exists, manifesting itself as the highest wisdom and the most radiant beauty, which our dull faculties can comprehend only in their most primitive forms -- this knowledge, this feeling, is at the center of true religiousness.''
Albert Einstein Shortly After The Birth Of His Son: ''Daddy's gonna EAT THESE WIDDLE TOES!''
After a month or so of bonding with their baby, the typical parents have the combined IQ of a charcoal briquette. This is when they decide it's OK to take the baby to a restaurant. I know what I'm talking about: My wife and I have a baby daughter, and we have repeatedly taken her to restaurants, even though by now experience should have taught us that it would be far more pleasant and relaxing for us to stay home and play tic-tac-toe on our foreheads with a soldering iron.
But we cannot help ourselves, and neither can you, if you're a new parent. That's why today I'm presenting these Helpful Tips For Dining Out With A Baby:

1. THE INSTANT YOU GET TO THE RESTAURANT, ASK FOR THE CHECK. You want to be able to pay and get out of there as quickly as possible when your baby screams, or decides -- as babies instinctively do, in restaurants -- to grunt out an impossibly large output, such that you experience a dreaded condition known to diaper scientists as Projectile Huggies Leakage (PHL). So it's best to pay your bill as you enter the restaurant, adding a little extra (say, $800) to compensate for the fact that after you're finished, your table may have to be burned. Some parents never actually enter the restaurant: They simply drive up to the front door, hurl money out the car window, then speed off, their baby wailing like an ambulance siren in the night.

2. REQUEST A TABLE IN A LOCATION THAT WILL NOT DISTURB OTHER DINERS. For example, if you want to eat at an elegant restaurant in New York City, you should try to get a table on the roof. Or, better still, at a Bob's Big Boy in Cleveland.

3. SELECT AN APPROPRIATE CUISINE. Of the wide variety of cuisines available today -- Italian, French, Chinese, Tiny Portions Of Meat With Some Kind Of Inedible Decorative Stuff Dribbled On The Plate In A Pattern As If It Were An Art Project Instead Of A Meal -- I would say that the best kind of cuisine, for the parent of a small baby, is a cuisine that you can eat with one hand. You, of course, need the other hand to keep putting things into your baby's mouth, so your baby can spit them out (a baby is not happy unless it is emitting something from somewhere). In fact, you may need both hands for this activity, so you might want to order an entree that you can eat with no hands, sporadically lunging your face down to your plate and snorking up food Labrador-retriever style. You will not have time to taste anything. Restaurant employees know this, and sometimes, for fun, they serve prank entrees to new parents, to see if they'll notice. A Boston restaurant recently got a new father, distracted by a small baby, to eat a whisk broom covered with melted cheese.
At least he ate something. Sometimes I spend the entire meal carrying my daughter around the restaurant, crossing paths with other nomadic parents carrying THEIR children around, each of us leaving a trail of drool. Our big night out! It may not sound like fun to you, but we parents of newborns are able to enjoy it because of our philosophy of life, which can be summed up by the immortal words penned by William Shakespeare shortly after the birth of his first child: ''Woogum woogum WOOGUM WOOGUM WOOGUM!''

In Honor of Valentine's Day...

A young woman was taking an afternoon nap. After she woke up, she told her husband, "I just dreamed that you gave me a pearl necklace for Valentine's day. What do you think it means?" "You'll know tonight," he said. That evening, the man came home with a small package and gave it to his wife. Delighted, she opened it--only to find a book entitled "The meaning of dreams".
A guy walks into a post office one day to see a middle-aged, balding man standing at the counter methodically placing "Love" stamps on bright pink envelopes with hearts all over them. He then takes out a perfume bottle and starts spraying scent all over them. His curiosity getting the better of him, he goes up to the balding man and asks him what he is doing. The man says, "I'm sending out one thousand Valentine cards signed, 'Guess who?'" "But why?" asks the man. "I'm a divorce lawyer," the man replies.
After a quarrel, a wife said to her husband, "You know, I was a fool when I married you." And the husband replied, "Yes, dear, but I was in love and didn't notice it."
A couple came upon a wishing well. The wife leaned over, made a wish and threw in a penny. The husband decided to make a wish, too but he leaned over too much, fell into the well, and drowned. The wife was stunned for a moment but then smiled, "It really works!"

A smart, handsome and sexy young man dressed in the most sophisticated manner walked into the bar. He noticed a woman staring at him without blinking her eyes with an open mouth. Flattered, he approached the woman and said in his sexiest deep voice - "I'll do anything you wish, beautiful lady, for just $20 but on one condition." The woman was trapped in a moment and asked as if in a trance - "What's your condition?" The young man replied, "Tell me your wish in just three words." After a long pause, woman opened her purse, counted the money and handed it to the man along with her address. She then looked deeply into his eyes and whispered, "Clean my house."

Friday the 13th

I don't consider myself superstitious. I don't care if a black cat crosses my path. I very rarely "knock on wood". With that being said, I believe in Friday the 13th. I don't know why, but all the freaks come out on that day. I was searching through my pictures trying to find one particular photo (that I will post sometime in the near future - you will love it!) and came across this picture, instead. I think this was about 1998, and I was working at good ol' R&K Building Supplies in the door shop. Best job EVER, by the way! Well, this year on Friday the 13th we decided to all BE the freaks that we dreaded. This is a picture of me with my old work buddy, Dan (he dressed up because of peer pressure, and a suit in a dirty old door shop is about as FREAKY as you get with Dan). There were a few others who dressed up, too. The only thing is that we had to act like we didn't know what people were looking at... like this was our "everyday" look. The door shop was very casual - shorts, t-shirts, whatever... so this was quite the shock to many fellow employees from other departments, and especially to the customers! I have done similar things through out my school years. I remember one day in high school, a few "select" people were invited by me to be part of secret "spirit week", where we had things like, "Clash your clothes day," and "bring an old kiddy lunchbox to school day". And as always, the key is to act like you don't know what people are talking about when they ask, "why are you dressed like that?!" My motto for years was, "why be normal?" I guess now as I look back, I was just a gigantic NERD!!
This is actually my grandma's dress and mink - and YES, that hair is all part of the act - however similar to my look of the late 80's!!

Super Bowl Sunday!

Go Cardinals! Haha. This picture makes me laugh. I got it off of a blog called cakewrecks.blogspot.com. If you ever want a laugh, go check out some of those cakes! Anyway, I figured keeping with the whole potty theme...what does this cake (well they're actually cupcakes) look like? Yeah, that's what I thought too! "Thanks for buying this poo..., I mean...football cake! Enjoy!"

It seems the only things my family finds funny have to do with pee or poop or toilet water. Hmmm... I find this very interesting. The only problem with this was that I was reminded of a story while reading these posts that is just too good to not post. Many of you may have heard this story, but it's worth remembering again.

A couple of years ago Natalie was newly potty trained, but old enough to just send her to the bathroom by herself. I kept finding pee on the floor around the toilet in the bathroom. I was thinking that Jackson had forgotten how to aim (although I didn't think that was possible, since I was the "Aiming Nazi" while he was learning stand up and "go"). Anyway, I wasn't sure why this was happening every day, until I saw Natalie going to the bathroom once and it all fit together for me! She was standing there facing the toilet, pants down, squeezing her belly button and peeing on the floor. I guess she wanted to be like her big brother!

Emily, Where Did You Get That?

It was the Spring of 1977, and I was sick in bed in our little apartment in Provo. Emily, age 2 1/2, was playing nurse. She brought me a drink of water which I quickly drank. I gave her the cup back, and she left the room, returning almost immediately with another cup of water for me. I asked her, "Emily, where did you get the water?"

She replied sweetly, "From the potty."

Life's little surprises

This past summer my parents took a trip to Seattle and Vancouver, B.C. My mom told me of something that happened while they were on the beach (I believe it was in Seattle). A bird flew over head and aimed right for her. Well, not only did this bird NOT miss my mom, but he (or she... I don't want to be bird sexist) had been eating some kind of dark berry and the poop was dark bluish purple. She was COVERED! The stain never came out of her clothes. Got to love those little surprises in life!

Making Jan Laugh

One day in the 1980's, I found a 2-liter bottle the kids had filled with water, and I hid it in our bathroom. That night, after Jan had finished getting ready for bed and was writing in her journal, I went into the bathroom and closed the door. I took the pop bottle and proceeded to pour the contents, with varying speeds, into the toilet. It took quite a long time to empty the entire contents, and it made a lot of noise. Then I flushed the toilet, washed my hands, turned out the light and walked back into the bedroom and waited for Jan's response. Her face was all the reinforcement I needed! She tried, she really tried, not to ask, but her face gave it away.
Yesterday in Relief Society we reviewed Elder Wirthlin's talk in the last general conference, "Come what may, and love it". What a wonderful talk! It reminded me that I need to learn to laugh again. Somehow in the last few years, laughter has been slowly seeping out of my life to the point where I almost need to remember how to laugh again. I decided to make this my humor blog and search for things to make me (and you) laugh. I would love to have other authors on this blog, so if you want to contribute, leave me a message with your email address and I'll invite you to contribute. For today I had to post a picture of something I found on another blog (http://www.cakewrecks.blogspot.com/). Check out that blog for a good laugh, too. This was just too bizarre!

Really? No Thanks, I'm stuffed!
